Verdict

The Kowa Prominar MFT 8.5mm f/2.8 is entering a busy segment of the market. It has some interesting value propositions but the pricing is, unfortunately, very bold. At 900US$ it better has to be excellent. Now while the lens is certainly good, it stays somewhat short of this expectation at least. The center quality is great and the borders are also very sharp at mainstream settings. The extreme corners aren't quite as convincing though. They are downright soft at f/2.8 and it's a good idea to stop down to f/4, better f/5.6 where the results are decent. The vignetting is also higher than usual especially at f/2.8. A downright stellar performance is the lack of distortion - probably the best ever measured quality here and we are talking about the native characteristic and not about a digitally corrected result.
코와 광학의 8.5mm 1:2.8 렌즈는 시장에서 꽤 붐비는 부분에 들어왔다. 꽤 흥미로운 가치제안을 하고 있지만 가격은 불행히도 매우 무뚝뚝하다. 대략 900불 정도였으면 좋았으리라. 아무튼 렌즈는 썩 괜찮은 편인데, 물론 기대에는 미치지 못하는 점이 있다. 중앙부 화질은 훌륭하며 주변부도 주로 쓰이는 조리개값에서 괜찮지만, 극주변부는 그리 좋지 못하다. f2.8에서는 순전히 소프트하므로 f4 정도로 조이는 것이 좋으며, 더 좋은 결과를 원한다면 f5.6 정도로 조여야 한다. 개방조리개에서의 비네팅도 예상보다 높다. 물론 왜곡이 존재하지 않는다는 큰 장점도 있다. - 우리가 계측해 본 렌즈 중에 가장 좋은 수준이며 디지털 보정이 전혀 개입되지 않은 것이다.

The mechanical qualities are also impressive. It feels like a lens from the good ol' days - in a positive way. The lens body is made of metal and the controls are smooth as silk. As aspect that is probably going to be less popular is the lack of AF and an electronically couple aperture. However, thanks to its unique Dual Link Iris, the aperture ring can be changed to a movie-friendly mode (smooth settings rather than clicks) so this makes some sense at least.
조작성 면에서도 이 렌즈는 훌륭하다. 옛날 좋았던 시절의 렌즈들의 장점들을 가지고 있다. 금속제 몸체와 조작부는 비단처럼 매끈하다. 이 렌즈는 AF나 전자식으로 바디와 연결된 조리개 같은 것이 없다는 점에서 썩 잘 팔리지는 못하겠지만, 독특한 듀얼링크 조리개 시스템 덕분에 조리개링의 클릭을 넣고 뺄 수 있으므로 영상 촬영자들에게는 어필할 수 있을 것이다.

Convincing mainstream MFT users of this lens is probably going to be a bit tough especially at this price point. Movie makers have different priorities regarding the AF and aperture handling though and we could well imagine that the Kowa Prominar MFT 8.5mm f/2.8 will find some friends here.
지금의 가격으로는 마이크로 포써즈 유저들에게 이 렌즈를 납득시키기는 힘들 것이다. 영상 제작자들은 AF나 조리개 조작에 대해 좀 다른 관점에서 접근하기 때문에 8.5mm 1:2.8 렌즈는 그들에게 보다 적합할 것이다.
