First Impressions

The PEN-F essentially takes a brand new 20MP Four Thirds sensor and sticks in in a rangefinder-style body with the guts and specifications of the near-flagship OM-D E-M5 II. What users gain in lovely design, they sacrifice in terms of weather-sealing and versatility (the PEN-F also omits a couple of 'nice to have' extras such as a microphone socket and a 2x2 switch).

Probably the most interesting aspect of the PEN-F is its new 20MP sensor. This is the first time we've seen Olympus use a sensor with more than 16MP in any of its Micro Four Thirds cameras. And though we have not had the chance to spend a ton of time with the Olympus PEN-F, first impressions of image quality are largely positive. Shutter shock has been an issue we've encountered with recent Olympus Micro Four Thirds releases, especially at speeds around 1/60 and 1/80 sec, but judging from our initial testing, this issue appears to have been resolved on the PEN-F.
아무래도 가장 기대되는 점은 신형 2천만화소 센서이다. 올림푸스가 최초로 1600만 화소를 넘는 센서를 쓰게 되는 것이다. 비록 PEN-F를 테스트하는 데 아직 충분한 시간을 갖지 못했지만, 화질에 대한 인상은 크게 긍정적이다. 근래의 올림푸스 마이크로포써즈 카메라에서, 특히 1/60~1/80초 사이에서 셔터쇼크를 크게 경험했지만, 우리가 일단 테스트해 볼 때, PEN-F는 이 문제를 해결한 것으로 보인다.

From a design standpoint, the camera is gorgeous to look at. Ergonomics are also terrific, with ample custom buttons, plenty of control dials and a comfortable, grippy design. Despite the annoying lack of weather-sealing, the overall build quality is also quite solid, thanks to the camera's magnesium alloy and aluminum chassis and well-machined dials. The only aspect of the design we question is the lack of customization on the new front creative control dial. We get the appeal of offering creative controls like Art Filters as well as Color and Monochrome profiles, in one single, easy-to-access place on the camera. But we fear for Raw shooters, this potentially quite useful control point will be essentially wasted.
디자인적 관점에서 이 카메라는 보기에 아주 좋다. 인체공학적으로도 아주 우수하며, 커스텀 버튼들이 충분하고 여러 다이얼들은 편안하며 손가락이 잘 달라붙는 형상을 가지고 있다. 방진방적 처리가 되어 있지 않은 점이 크게 거슬리지만 마그네슘 합금 및 알루미늄으로 만들어진 몸체, 잘 가공된 디자인 등으로 인해 만듦새는 몹시 단단하다. 우리가 의문을 가지는 딱 한 가지 부분은 전면부의 크리에이티브 다이얼의 커스텀 설정이 불가능한 점이다. 물론 아트필터나 컬러, 모노크롬 프로파일 등의 기능을 아주 좋은 위치에 달린 다이얼로 조작하는 재미가 쏠쏠하지만, RAW로 찍는 사람들에겐 아주 유용할 수 있는 다이얼 하나의 낭비일 뿐이다.

Although we try not to talk too much about cost when discussing new cameras (what a particular camera is worth depends entirely on who you're asking) we do think that at the point of launch, the PEN-F is priced rather high. That's because the also recently-released rangefinder-style Fujifilm X-E2S can be had for $500 less, and Sony's 24MP a6000 is currently selling for even less. And both of these cameras use APS-C sensors rather than Four Thirds. As well as bigger sensors, both of these competitive cameras also features hybrid AF systems, rather relying only on contrast detection. Still, the PEN-F packs in some impressive and unique features, including 5-axis image stabilization and an 80MP high resolution capture mode.
물론 우리가 새 카메라를 이야기할 때 가격을 문제삼지는 않지만 (어떤 특정한 카메라던지 그 가치는 전적으로 어떤 사람이 물어보느냐에 달렸지만) 우리가 생각하기에 출시 시점에서 PEN-F는 꽤 비싸다. 최근에 출시된 비슷한 스타일의 X-E2S는 500달러나 저렴하며, 소니의 2400만 화소짜리 a6000은 지금 더 값싸게 구할 수 있다. 또한 두 카메라는 모두 APS-C급의 센서를 사용하고 있다. 그뿐만 아니라 PEN-F는 컨트라스트 AF만을 사용하지만 저 두 카메라 모두 하이브리드 AF 시스템을 가지고 있다. 물론 PEN-F는 5축 손떨림 보정이나 8천만 화소 고화질 모드 등의 기능을 가지고 있긴 하다.

Ultimately, despite some concerns, the PEN-F is a nicely made, beautiful camera with some fun and unique features that's a pleasure to use. We're looking forward to doing more shooting - and testing - in the coming weeks.
